FAQ's about contacting your MP

  • Most MPs get hundreds of messages a day. They or their staff usually log them, prioritise urgent local issues or casework, and aim to reply within 2-4 weeks.

  • MPs are obliged to respond to their constituents' concerns. If your MP hasn't responded to your email within a month, do consider following up with them - they and their staff are extremely busy but shouldn't object to receiving a prompt. Very occasionally, an MP simply won't respond, even after being followed up a couple of times.

  • You’ll usually receive a reply explaining the MP’s view and possibly details of what they’ve done.

If we believe there's a particular benefit or opportunity for an MP to take a specific action, such as one or more of the below, we will include the ask within the email template you receive. If your MP is particularly keen to do or to learn more, we can support you to continue the dialogue with them; or you can direct them to our dedicated, specialist team at public.affairs@breastcanceruk.org.uk.

Depending on the issue and how many constituents raise it, an MP can:

    • Write to the relevant government minister or department to ask about policy or request action.
    • Submit a parliamentary question (written or oral) to get an official answer from the government.
    • Raise the issue in a debate or committee meeting.
    • Sign an Early Day Motion (EDM) or support a private member’s bill if one relates to the issue.
    • Discuss it with their party colleagues or the All-Party Parliamentary Groups (e.g., the APPG on Breast Cancer).
    • If it’s part of a larger campaign, MPs often report back to the organisation (like Breast Cancer UK) that they’ve raised it.
  • No, your email address is strictly internal. Please see our privacy notice for more information on how your data is stored.

  • MPs are only obliged to respond to people who provide a valid UK address within their constituency. If you live outside the UK (or outside their constituency), your message will almost always be redirected or ignored, because parliamentary rules and office protocols require them to prioritise constituent correspondence.
You can still add your name and we will still count your support toward public awareness and campaigning momentum, even if you can’t contact an MP directly. Additionally, please feel free to follow or share Breast Cancer UK’s updates on social media.
